Donald Lloyd Aiken August 3, 1938 - September 19, 2022
Donald Lloyd Aiken entered the spirit world on September 19, 2022 at Grand Coulee Hospital, Washington. He comes from the Pembina Band of the Ojibwe Plains people, born on the Turtle Mountain Reservation, Belcourt, North Dakota on August 3, 1938. His Indian name is Sun Eagle, belonging to the Bear Clan. Don is the first child born to Eliza and Frank Aiken. His nickname was Sonny Boy. He was the husband of Dianna Vargas Aiken. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Christopher Donald Aiken and five daughters, Linda Jean Aiken, Shelly Irene Aiken, Jackie Gail Aiken, Colette Rene Aiken and Jennifer Cassonadre Aiken Ross, and two step-daughters, Nakona Running Bear and Justina James Simpson, as well as 10 grandchildren, Krystal Ann Aiken Bond Ming Ming, Sarah Marie Aiken Anderson, Eric Christopher Howard, Elizabeth Ann Witcherman, Dakota Mae Bartholemew, Joshua Frank Morning Owl, Julien Jerry Ross, Marion Lewis Ross, Lena Aura Ross, Mason Remi Aiken, and Grace Ellea Aiken and 10 great-grandchildren, Leeland Ethan Ming Ming, Viviana Sky Ming Ming, Winter Hazel Rose Ming Ming, Lukas Anderson, Noah Anderson, Kyndra Marlene Howard, Jasiah Champ Davis, Cameran Reed, Kyle Ashton, Colton Lloyd Ashton, as well as, Hazel Woodcock Aiken and numerous nieces and nephews.
Don became the patriarch of the Aiken family. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Frank Vincent Aiken, and a sister, Bernadette Ann Aiken. He leaves behind two brothers, John Ronald Aiken, sister-in-law Marilyn Aiken, and Theodore Lawrence Aiken and two sisters Patricia Jeannette Simmons and Alma Josephine Vince.
Don attended Elementary Schools in Rolla and Max, North Dakota, and Max High School prior to entering the military. At the age of 16, he worked for Peter Kiewit, building run ways for the Minot Air Force Base, Minot, North Dakota. Don entered the U.S. Air Force at the age of 17 where he received his military training at Lackland AFB, Texas and Technical training at Wichita Falls. Texas. His stateside assignments included Malstrum AFB, Great Falls, Montana and Fairchild AFB, Spokane. His overseas assignments were South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Sundrom AFB, Greenland. Don loved music and was a Disc Jockey while in Greenland. He received an Honorable Discharge after 14 years of service. Thereafter, Don began working for the Coeur d’ Alene Tribe in Plummer, Idaho and for the Colville Tribe in Nespelem as a Substance Abuse Counselor.
Don was a Sun Dancer, pipe carrier, and ceremonial person. During these times, he would travel to the Turtle Mountain Reservation to participate in the Sun Dances at the Eagle and Thunderbird Lodges and volunteer to help with the healing ceremonies, singing and drumming, at the Turtle Lodge and Sweat Lodge.
Don was a strong warrior yet had a gentle way about him, a genuine man with a good-natured manner, a kind heart, a smile for everyone, and laughter when sharing stories and jokes. He was especially joyful when family and friends came to visit him. Don was an exceptional person, so loving to all who entered his home. He will forever be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 24th at 10 AM at the Community Center in Nespelem, with Rosary and Wake on Friday at 7 PM at the Community Center as well.

HOW MANY TIMES WAS THIS SCENE PLAYED OUT IN REAL LIFE DURING THE DEPRESSION ? My grandfather was sent to a work camp in Louisiana 1934. His mother would visit and talk to him through chicken wire . She fell into such a great sadness, she got addicted to morphine and died .

I never understood why at the beginning of the movie that Hoffman so easily gave up on his Indian life to leave and go to the city. He grew up in that life and seems he prospered and had family and friends there. The soldier chasing Hoffman with sword yes had he off the horse on the ground but a couple times he could have killed the guy and got up and left.. But he didnt. Just seemed odd when I saw it. To me it didn't make sense is all lol. Thx

My Dad was a Vancouver cab driver for years and one night in the seventies his fare was chief Dan George, who was coming out of a hotel with two expensive white hookers, one on each arm. When they got into the back of his cab, Dad smiled at Dan George and said, "I bet your heart is soaring lie a hawk".

I took up playing and singing it based on Stanton's performance. One of the many small bits of genius in this film.
